Discount shopping
February 21, 2008
For some, finding clothes on sale has become an art form. If "retail prices are for suckers" is your mantra, you'll have a field day at these places (if you haven't already).
Nordstrom Rack
24 N. State St.
Chicago, IL 60602
(312) 377-5500
http://shop.nordstrom.com
Hours: open daily

Find discounted items mainly from the previous season at Nordtrom’s outlet store. It typically has great deals and selections of jeans, shoes, outerwear and workout gear. You'll also find some home and beauty items as well as a menswear selection.

Marshall's
4612 W. Irving Park Rd.
Chicago, IL 60641
(773) 282-0078
http://www.marshallsonline.com
Hours: open daily

Marshall's is full of discount surprises. The store is usually well-organized (and even better now that the shoe department has been reconfigured). Marshall's has a good stock of home goods, name-brand clothes (like Roxy and Calvin Klein) and shoes. You can also find some discounted high-end hair and skin products.

T.J.Maxx
2840 N. Broadway St.
Chicago, IL 60657
(773) 975-2347
http://www.tjmaxx.com
Hours: open daily

T.J.Maxx is synonymous with discount shopping. The store, while not always the best organized, is a great place to treasure hunt for that certain something. Stocked with brand-name clothes, home items, baby and child clothing and toys, menswear and some foodstuffs, expect to spend a fair amount of time combing the racks.

Loehmann's
151 N. State St.
Chicago, IL 60601
(312) 705-3810
http://www.loehmanns.com
Hours: open daily

A tad pricier than some of the other discount stores, Loehmann's is a wonderland for those looking for designer discount. You'll find everything from evening wear to outerwear. The designers and merchandise (like most discount stores) are constantly changing, so it's a good idea to check back frequently.

DSW
1101 S. Canal St.
Chicago, IL 60640
(312) 880-0245
http://www.dswshoes.com
Hours: open daily

DSW is all about discounted footwear. While you'll find a lot of Sketchers, you'll also find more high-end names. For boots in the winter or sandals in the spring the selection is large. DSW has some good sales, too, if you keep an eye out for them. Handbags and some accessories are also present.

Gap Factory Outlet
2778 N. Milwaukee Ave.
Chicago, IL 60647
(773) 252-0594
http://www.gap.com
Hours: open daily

This is the place to go for discount Gap apparel. You may even see some things you never saw in a regular Gap store. It's an especially great place to go for tanks, T-shirts and jeans. Gap accessories are also on display. The store itself is clean and well-organized with plenty of dressing rooms.

Fox's
2150 N. Halsted St.
Chicago, IL 60614
(773) 281-0700
http://www.foxs.com
Hours: open daily

The goal at Fox’s is to offer discount designer clothes with personal attention from sales staff. For over 20 years the store has been helping bargain shoppers look chic for cheap. You'll find clothes for every occasion, but Fox's is a great place to visit when you've got somewhere special to attend. Keep an eye out for great accessories like purses.

Filene's Basement
830 N. Michigan Ave.
Chicago, IL 60611
(312) 482-8918
http://www.filenesbasement.com
Hours: open daily

This is one of those discount stores you see people trying to hide bargains from one another. In fact, they even have a special event called the “Running of the Brides," where discounted designer gowns are brought in for the day and women fight like wild animals to find the perfect one. But can you blame people for going a little crazy? With brands like Marc Jacobs and Micheal Kors, people will tend to get a little greedy.

Mark Shale Outlet
2593 N. Elston Ave.
Chicago, IL 60647
(773) 772-9600
http://www.markshale.com
Hours: open daily

It’s all a waiting game at the Mark Shale Outlet, as most of their sales are the previous season’s leftovers from the regular Mark Shale store. This store is a little more on the sophisticated side, so it's not the place to find "hip" fashions. However, it might be one of the few discount stores where the men's side has a better selection than the ladies.

Nine West Outlet
2058 N. Halsted St.
Chicago, IL 60614
(773) 871-4154
http://www.ninewest.com
Hours: open daily

The Nine West Outlet carries previous season shoes from regular Nine West stores. The outlet occasionally carries purses, coats and other accessories as well. The store usually has a good selection and more often than not you'll find some sort of sale.
