Decoding your dreams
April 23, 2007
If you've ever dreamed that you slept through your alarm and missed that big chemistry test, count yourself in the majority. If you've ever wondered what it meant (considering you've thankfully come a long way from those chem days), check out these dream-focused sites.
Howstuffworks: Dreams
http://science.howstuffworks.com
If last night's dream left you with a laundry-list of questions, this award-winning website covers the topic pretty thoroughly. If you're wondering how to improve your dream recall (it's said we forget half a dream's content five minutes after its end), how to treat recurring nightmares or what's behind premonitions in dream's, you'll find theories, advice and answers here.

Dream Mood's A-Z Dictionary
http://www.dreammoods.com
Claiming that "no one is a better expert at interpreting your dreams than yourself," this dream dictionary features meanings for more than 4,000 words and symbols. The site isn't much to look at, but provides an easy reference for finding out the symbolism of that kangaroo (maternal protection) or umbrella (apparently you're avoiding dealing with your emotions).

Experience Project: Dreams
http://www.experienceproject.com
Do you love to bore, umm, tell your friends your dreams? This forum may be the place to go if you're looking for open ears. An online community connecting members through "shared experiences," once you register (free) you'll be able to submit your dreams and nightmares (be warned that some of them are racy) for interpretation and analysis by the community.

The International Association for the Study of Dreams
http://asdreams.org
This non-profit organization has a lot of, well, dreamy goals. To promote an awareness and appreciation of dreams is one of them, making it a good stop for both enthusiasts and cynics. Head to the education section to find book suggestions and answers to common questions like "Are dreams in color?", or join an e-study group, an online discussion group hosted by the Association for the Study of Dreams.

Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams
http://www.psywww.com
Published in 1899, this book introduced Freud's theory on dreams. It's a pretty heavy text, but if you're ready to tackle it (but not ready to pay for it), this online version lets you read it in all its glory, from passages on typical dreams to an explanation of the Wish-Fulfillment.

PBS Kids: Dreams
http://pbskids.org
Next time Johnny has a nightmare or Maya ask why we dream, point them to this site (or use it to find age-appropriate answers). It tackles topics what do dreams mean, addresses dreams so great that you're bummed when you wake up, explains how to deal with nightmares and talks about common dreams like flying and meeting someone famous.

SmartGirl's Dream Dictionary
http://www.smartgirl.org
A site (surprisingly) owned and run by the University of Michigan, SmartGirl may be pretty girlie, with its purple background and "crush barometer," but if you have a daughter who wants to know what the swimming pool in her dream meant (luck, if it's full), this is a light and fun site that's worth checking out.
